Say hello! Introduce yourself!
Steven - Sun, Nov 16th, 2008 2:16 PM PST
Hi Von, Thank you - you know, some people succeed because they are destined to, but most people succeed because they are determined to. Sincerely, Steven carole - Thu, Nov 13th, 2008 9:19 AM PST Thank you, Von, for the update on your film. I remember you and am glad to know you have not given up. Tenacity is the backbone of the filmmaker. I will keep your project in mind. Best regards, Carole Rich - Tue, Nov 11th, 2008 8:51 AM PST Von, You are a class act all the way with the passion and the creativity and the talent of a true professional. We are working together to make this dream come true and your level of commitment is extraordinary! nita - Sun, Nov 9th, 2008 2:17 PM PST Von, I've been catching up on your ongoing endeavors. So PROUD of you. While you struggle to get your father the recognition he deserves, you're finding yourself in that effort as well. It reminds me of a recent story here in our local paper. An African American WWII soldier had earned a Purple Heart, Bronze Star, etc but had never received those medals. His family campaigned for 50 years (longer, actually) but they finally got them. Big ceremony, big turnout, big validation. It's a shame they had to work so hard for so long for something that was clearly deserved in the beginning. Anyway, you know I'm a big fan! Keep it up! Also, drooling about Stanley Clarke. Cripes, how great izzat? cainer - Fri, Nov 7th, 2008 9:45 PM PST We have to keep on trying. And when we do? Well if anything is going to awaken anything within you this week let it be your sense of determination. Your wit. Your cleverness. Your refusal to be beaten. No excuse. joe - Tue, Nov 4th, 2008 11:10 PM PST hi von. just looked up your dad harry. you are a very lucky young man to have such father with a tallent. and to hand it down to you. so you could make such great music. i must admit that out of your 3 albums. bridge to presage is a master peace. i've told everyone that know who loves truly great music to buy this and surrender now. your mind. im sure by now everyone in london knows your band. please keep the great stuff coming von/don/dave.....marcus/glen/ron/bob..what a bunch of masters. joe Pushyka - Sat, Nov 1st, 2008 9:19 PM PDT I have to tell you that, this week, a dream will come true. NY - Wed, Oct 29th, 2008 2:43 PM PDT Von, I thought of you this morning when I read the paper about Denny Tadesco's film. Do you know of him? Like you, he's the son of a major recording musician and made a documentary about his father's generation, "The Wrecking Crew". I'm sure he'd be fascinated by your father's story. Good luck! ak - Tue, Oct 28th, 2008 1:19 AM PDT I am very much interested in the project from a story point of view. I would like to look at the script if you have one. I look forward to discussing this matter further if you are interested. The Bleep - Sat, Oct 25th, 2008 2:22 PM PDT Thanks for the infinite possibilities! Jonathan - Fri, Oct 24th, 2008 8:29 PM PDT Award yourself a medal. You deserve one. Indeed, you are entitled to an entire row. Have one for endurance, another for fortitude and one for kindness even whilst under severe stress. You have been through a lot lately. You may or may not feel that you have handled it well, but you are hardly in a position to make an objective judgement. Given the exceptionally trying circumstances you have been up against, your progress has been truly remarkable. Dave - Fri, Oct 24th, 2008 12:49 AM PDT Congratulations... the film sounds very exciting and of course the subject matter has a lot of value and is near and dear to you. Sounds like a recipe for an interesting and successful film. Dave kg - Wed, Oct 15th, 2008 10:47 AM PDT That's the best feeling. One CD purchased by someone from the other side of the world who found you all on their own. So cool! Glad to see everything's going well for you. k Marc - Mon, Oct 13th, 2008 3:52 PM PDT Von, Great news all around. Keep at it. Forget about the economy. In the end, you will have your dad's tale told. And fabulous photo of you and Stanley. Glad to hear you're well! Marc stephen - Sat, Oct 11th, 2008 2:36 PM PDT Von! I've heard ONOFFON before in the past... ...exceptional work. Your father sounds like an amazing man! Best of luck! Stephen NYU - Wed, Oct 8th, 2008 8:25 PM PDT Wow, you just take those reins and run with every opportunity, don't you? That's awesome! Steve - Sun, Oct 5th, 2008 1:00 AM PDT Von, What a great conversation we had on Wednesday. Amazing true stories carry a little more weight. Even though this project is designed as a Documentary, the endorsement from NYFA may help. No doubt, this story could and should be told and cherished by those who love Jazz (and their Pops). Know that I love your project and believe in its worth. Sincerely Steven Tanya - Tue, Sep 30th, 2008 10:02 AM PDT Indeed, Harry Babasin may well be the greatest American jazz musician you've never heard of. I would have to agree with that, wholeheartedly! Scott - Mon, Sep 29th, 2008 6:32 AM PDT "I believe Von's passion for this time period, years of research, and commitment to presenting a detailed, yet rich picture of his father's role in 'Jazz In Hollywood' will ensure that this project is both accurate and significant reflection of our shared culture." Scott Willis Independent Jazz Disc Jockey Former Music Director - KKJZ, 88.1 FM liamk - Thu, Sep 25th, 2008 5:20 AM PDT Keep on keeping on, Von! Nomi - Sun, Sep 21st, 2008 12:45 PM PDT Hey Von, I read about your documentary and that's really great. Congratulations. I'm sure a film would bring the attention you need to get the museum going, if it doesn't happen before. You're an inspiring workaholic. Nomi gbounds - Tue, Sep 16th, 2008 3:15 PM PDT God bless you for what you're doing for your father and for jazz! orest - Sun, Sep 7th, 2008 5:09 PM PDT You are working hard for this and I understand what your father meant and still do! Your music is really great! Not always you find musicians to play with at this level! Especially liked "Mardi Gras". Keep up the good work and I'd love to see you perform here in Sweden! Frank Pope - Sun, Aug 31st, 2008 7:12 PM PDT Von!!!! I can't believe some foundation hasn't given you a freakin' wheelbarrow full of money to make this movie! Your father's story is undeniable! There are only a finite number of jazz innovators in history and your father was one of the greatest of all time! Best of luck to you to get this deserving genius' story told as it should be. Frank dwalton - Sat, Aug 30th, 2008 4:54 PM PDT Von, Are you coming to the Rally, if for no other reason, just to see everybody? If not, I'm staying in LA after the Rally to attend another conference. For the most part, Monday Nov 10th through Wed Nov 12th are open days. It'd be a shame with all that time if we didn't get together, have a coffee, lunch or something and gab about music, the world, whatever topic comes up. Cheers! KC jazz - Thu, Aug 28th, 2008 9:45 AM PDT I've gone to your web site and downloaded the excellent August 2007 "Rediscovering the miracle of West Coast jazz" article about your father. What a remarkable life! Kathy - Mon, Aug 25th, 2008 11:17 AM PDT Dear Mr. Babasin, I'm sending you some links to the Kansas City Jazz Museum. They may well have some information and artifacts to share with you about your father. I'll get back to you about what's available for your research from our collections as soon as I know. It was a pleasure to talk with you, Mr. Babasin, and to learn more about your father's extraordinary career as a jazz musician. Kate 8th Annual Independent Music Awards - Fri, Aug 22nd, 2008 9:20 PM PDT Congratulations, you are officially entered in the 8th Annual Independent Music Awards, a unique international program that helps independent artists reach wider audiences and recognition. We're honored to have the opportunity to expose your music and help advance your career. Wishing you great success, Lauren marcelo - Wed, Aug 20th, 2008 12:26 PM PDT I'm a chilean musician (guitar) and admire your music in OnOffOn ! You play bass very well ! Cheers ! (saludos) Grande ! ad - Tue, Aug 19th, 2008 6:04 AM PDT Take care my friend -- I have no advice to give, just well wishes, thoughts and prayers in your direction. NY - Fri, Aug 15th, 2008 10:56 AM PDT At least you still laugh. You've heard the term "life work"? Having a legacy like your dad's in your hands is a gift and a burden. dw - Mon, Aug 11th, 2008 2:23 PM PDT I think that you're really blessed to have the kind of history and "reminders" at practically every turn, things that reinforce who he was and what he meant to you and other people. And how many of those things are yet to be discovered? As much as anyone I hope that the journey can continue to be meaningful and that the end result exceeds your dreams. Dave - Fri, Aug 8th, 2008 10:43 PM PDT This sounds crazy (and you may have done it) but what about contacting Clint Eastwood? He's a big jazz fan, someone who is always looking for interesting things to produce. Getting a message through to Clint Eastwood might be easier than we'd imagine. BT - Wed, Aug 6th, 2008 5:24 AM PDT I had no idea that Harry was involved in west coast jazz until you brought it to my attention. It seems to me that this unfortunate void might well be made a great selling point for your production. Just continue to realize that now's the time to erase the void!!! Bill - Fri, Aug 1st, 2008 7:15 PM PDT The irony is that your father was a far greater musician than Mr. Baker. The latter cultivated a "style," and style goes only so far in the long run. I use a bit of a recording made by him and Gerry Mulligan in my Jazz in L.A. talks, and it is great listening, but his imagination and range (Baker's) and technique were sorely limited. Pat - Tue, Jul 29th, 2008 4:26 AM PDT I'm very excited - today, the movie, "The Band's Visit", releases in video stores. It's an award-winning, independent Israeli film that mentions your father's name in the dialogue in reference to Chet Baker's discography. A character in the film says that Baker's first recording was with the "Harry Babasin Octet". I'm not sure if it's something you would use in your film, but it's most certainly extremely cool. liam - Mon, Jul 28th, 2008 9:01 PM PDT Von When I first met you, I think the first thing I blurted out to you was that I had been so moved by your testament to your Dad. I think I probably blurted it out before the usual social restraints could hold me back That's the way I am. Well, I still feel the same. Hoping you (and family) are well, Von Liam Drew - Sun, Jul 27th, 2008 12:16 PM PDT You're doing things right, Von. Congrats and keep it up. Jason - Thu, Jul 24th, 2008 9:47 AM PDT YOU'RE FINALLY MAKING THE FILM?!?!? THAT'S FREAKING INSANELY AWESOME. Your dad was raw talent, as were the people he played with. Bill - Thu, Jul 17th, 2008 8:24 AM PDT Von - Your documentary about your father is something vitally needed by Los Angeles as well as the annals of American music, a story that must be told, and the sooner the better. Best of luck! Mai - Wed, Jul 16th, 2008 10:07 AM PDT I am an Egyptian journalist who writes for one of the largest entertainment magazines in the Middle East - El Kawakeb Magazine. I would like to do an interview with you for the magazine. Would that be okay? Let me know. Thanks - Mai Jack - Tue, Jul 15th, 2008 11:04 AM PDT Hi Von: I knew your dad quite well and respected him greatly. You come from fine stock. Good luck on your mission. All best, Jack JAH - Sun, Jul 13th, 2008 1:49 PM PDT I hope you were able to make contact regarding the photos with Benny Carter. Surprisingly, the two volume work on Benny Carter makes no mention of the engagement at the Morocco Club you informed me of, an indication that there is much research to be done. Thanks for your valuable info and research! Vikki - Fri, Jul 11th, 2008 8:05 PM PDT That's really lovely, Von, a great acknowledgement of the work you have been inspired to do. I know it hasn't always been easy, but obviously your efforts are recognized and touch people in ways that you can't see. Trust in that. Drew - Wed, Jul 9th, 2008 5:56 AM PDT Is it too early to celebrate? I have a bottle of champagne waiting. Lucina - Sat, Jul 5th, 2008 9:35 AM PDT Hello Von, I read your e-mail and the Reporter article about your father's talent in jazz, and appreciated your dedication to the memory of his achievements. I wish you all the success in your plans. I suggest that you interest the USC jazz department in your project; not so much for financial help, as for establishing contacts in and outside the campus. Wishing you all the best, Lucina RB - Thu, Jul 3rd, 2008 10:11 PM PDT Von, Everything you are bringing forth is so cool and will only compliment and enhance your project...we will call you next week... You also have a smooth 4th... sylvia - Fri, Jun 27th, 2008 11:25 AM PDT Hi Von, Definitely worth waiting for. Great picture! You are lucky to get them. sylvia zk - Thu, Jun 26th, 2008 12:20 AM PDT Hi Von, This is sooo interesting... I really am fascinated with the process of what you're doing. Thanks for sharing John - Tue, Jun 24th, 2008 5:31 AM PDT In 1994, John Goldsby, a New York bassist who, at the time, performed with the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, and a scholar of bass history who teaches at William Paterson College in New Jersey, wrote an article in the April issue of Bass Player Magazine about Harry Babasin. In it, he states: "Traditional Brazilian bass parts are usually played with only half notes, as shown in Ex. 1 [diagramed in the article]. Babasin changed the feel of these lines by adding eighth-notes (Ex. 2), and this is the basis for the bossa nova bass lines most of us play today. Babasin went further, exploring various embellishments on the bossa nova beat that give the bassist further freedom (Ex. 3). A recording of the seminal bossa nova jazz band with Babasin and Almeida was made in 1953 and has been reissued on CD called Brazilliance Vol. 1." UNT - Fri, Jun 20th, 2008 9:17 AM PDT Hi Von, I am listening to your father´s CD as I am writing. WONDERFUL! Thanks again for meeting with us and sharing your father´s exciting jazz history. We wish you the best with your funding and we look forward to seeing the film. I know this is an exciting time for you. Please stay in touch and let us know how it is going. Again if you are in Texas, please let us know so you can plan a Denton trip. All the best, Pam Valery - Wed, Jun 18th, 2008 5:44 AM PDT Hi Von :-) Great to hear from you! I am forwarding your information to our Editor for consideration. Keep thriving... Valery Joe - Sat, Jun 14th, 2008 12:20 PM PDT Von - I had the pleasure of meeting your father several times in the mid-eighties at Drum City and the local 47. He actually sold me my copy of Inglewood Jam. I also have an original 78 of Bopmatism on the Dial label and I'm fairly sure that I have an Imperial 45 of the Oscar Pettiford session somewhere in my collection but I wasn't aware that Harry was the other cellist. Your Hollywood Jazz website is Excellent. Roy Harte will always be dear to me in so many ways, and I can only wish I had known more about him when he was here with us so that I could ask him more about things/his career, etc. Best of luck with your doc! Jim - Thu, Jun 12th, 2008 5:06 PM PDT Hi Von, I would be happy to provide a revised statement for your files. There are a few pressing research items at the moment, but I will get this done and off to you. Some recent research came across a Benny Carter Quartet in 1947 with Barney Kessel, Harry Babasin, and a piano player that I do not recognize. Do you know who he is, or do your files list your Dad with this quartet? Best, Jim MM - Wed, Jun 11th, 2008 10:58 AM PDT This is the story of a son's search for his father and the discovery of where Harry Babasin fits into the West Coast jazz story. Von Babasin's proposed documentary film merits financial support. Respectfully AFFMA - Sat, Jun 7th, 2008 1:37 AM PDT The contribution of Von Babasin to the history of music would be no less important than his father´s contribution to music itself. Therefore, Arpa Foundation for Film, Music and Art offers its wholehearted support to Von´s project. marc - Thu, Jun 5th, 2008 9:42 AM PDT personally, i think your documentary is less about your dad and more about you and your search for your dad and his legacy. i think that would be a more interesting film and would be more commercially appealing, since everyone has a dad, and every son to some extent goes through life with that quest and responsibility. just a thought from one harry fan to another. Zaven - Thu, Jun 5th, 2008 12:51 AM PDT We are absolutely inspired and willing to work side by side with others! All the best, Zaven Nad - Mon, Jun 2nd, 2008 3:40 AM PDT Good Morning, I discovered the onoffon website and really like it. What a wealth of information and lots of great links too. I will be visiting the site again to do further exploring but right away I noticed several links to great music sites. I look forward to learning more about onoffon. Thanks so much! Nad Neslo Gary - Sat, May 31st, 2008 3:07 PM PDT Dear Mr Babasin We are presently involved in the last week of classes here at the University and if possible, I would like to give you a call next week and we can have a conversation about your father, Harry Babasin. Please let me know if this will work for you. Gary Steve - Fri, May 30th, 2008 11:04 AM PDT You're on your way. I love watching a dream come true, even more so when I already believe in it. 'cause your funding IS coming steve Bill - Thu, May 29th, 2008 12:02 PM PDT Lionel Hampton was a good friend of mine, and one of his greatist aphorisms (of which there were many!) was about the best way to play jazz. He said "There's only one way: Your way." Bill - Wed, May 28th, 2008 11:41 AM PDT Well I finally got around to listening to some of your ONOFFON group. Quite a group and quite an exciting, creative, bunch of music. Your group reminds me at times of the music of John Adams! I got only through track #4, but will get back to the remainder, hopefully, tomorrow. You are quite a bass thumper! Who does the arrangements, or do you do it as a group. I will await learning just how you created those sounds on DUETTO. Have a great weekend. Bill Jim - Wed, May 21st, 2008 7:36 AM PDT Today is the 20th anniversary of Harry Babasin's passing. The world lost a truly creative musical genius and his innovations still impact the face of jazz even today. Respect. LD - Tue, May 20th, 2008 2:54 PM PDT From what I have learned of you in a brief time, after a few e-mail messages, your Mom and Dad must have been extremely proud of the fine human being you are! May God comfort you and ease the heaviness of your heart by the lovely memories that you have of such special parents! With heartfelt sympathy... Bill - Sun, May 18th, 2008 1:55 PM PDT The mail came this afternoon. Thanks a million. Got lotsa listening to do! Bill Lucille - Fri, May 16th, 2008 10:10 PM PDT Von, the very fact that you are proceeding and have gotten the NYFA sponsorship, I am sure, was a great encouragement to your dear mother! Indeed, you are doing something that is a great service to all of us who love jazz in general, and West Coast Jazz in particular!!! May God be with you as you chronicle a glorious time in jazz history, honoring artists whose gifts will never be equalled!!! Prayers are continuing for you and your wonderful project!!! God bless you always, Lucille Tom - Fri, May 16th, 2008 8:58 AM PDT My thoughts are with you, Von. I will be playing some of your Dad's music today in Christchurch, New Zealand. Best Wishes, Tom Howard - Thu, May 15th, 2008 8:56 AM PDT Dear Mr. Babasin -- Thanks for your note, and letting me know about your father's works. I'll be interested in the progress of your project. I like all sorts of good music, and I admire the focus you've developed to forward your initiative. Keep me informed! Howard Bob - Mon, May 12th, 2008 8:01 AM PDT Von, Wow! Elida - Sat, May 10th, 2008 4:38 AM PDT Please let me know if we might be able to help you in any way. Your father is fondly remembered here in the UNT College of Music. Good luck with your project. Gratefully yours, Elida Eric - Fri, May 9th, 2008 12:24 AM PDT Unbelievable story! Your father was amazing and your story to make this documentary is epic!!!!! It's unfathomable to think that a piece of paper that John Lennon wrote on sold for as much as the budget of your movie! The world sure is crazy. I wish you the best of luck in making this historic film. squids - Wed, May 7th, 2008 5:14 AM PDT Von, you so da man about your dad. I wish I had a relationship with mine like you did with yours. Crazy skilled, all y'all! And your PR skills completely rock the house! Go NYFA! Curtis - Sun, May 4th, 2008 12:03 AM PDT The world is full of people who are "compelled" to do something but haven't got the power to do it. I hope you are able to find someone(s) to help you, but these days philanthropy may be farther and farther out of reach. God bless you and your good work. Jon - Fri, May 2nd, 2008 7:09 AM PDT Gentlemen, I agree. This is a cornerstone project that celebrates a life and culture. This is excellent news! We'll talk soon. Jon Janae - Thu, May 1st, 2008 10:41 AM PDT Call To Action!!!! Everyone should donate as they can to the production of this important documentary! http://www.onoffon.com/nyfa.html Great work, Von! William - Wed, Apr 30th, 2008 8:04 PM PDT Von: I was in the Lab Band at North Texas in 1946. Harry Babasin was a revered name there, even then. I believe that his sister was in school when I was there, played violin or viola. I am a retired prof and former dean of music at USC, and I have a continuing interest in jazz. Did you know that there is an Armenian Music Center at USC? It was begun back in the 80s by my pal and colleague Grant Beglarian (now deceased). Would you like an address for contact? I suspect that they would be thrilled to know of your existence and local address, might even be of some assistance re the film. Sincerely yours, William Jeff - Wed, Apr 30th, 2008 6:44 AM PDT Thanks very much Von, for inviting us all to participate in getting this important jazz documentary made. I feel honored to be able to make a contribution to this worthy cause. I encourage everyone else to take a moment and make a contribution, according to their means. I realize that some of you are on a tight budget, and I certainly understand that. However, I also figure some of you are rolling in the "happy cabbage", and I urge you to help get this story told. I've put my $ where my mouth is. Regards, Jeff John - Tue, Apr 29th, 2008 7:45 PM PDT Hi Von, It was a pleasure to speak with you today and to read about your project. I will share the information with my colleagues in the jazz studies division and the music library and brainstorm about ways to help you find the resources you need. I think where we could play a role is in publicizing the project among our network of supporters. This has the potential to connect you with potential donors. Best wishes, John mm - Mon, Apr 28th, 2008 9:00 PM PDT Von, Thanks. Keeping the art alive is key and a group effort. I wish I were independently wealthy. I'd give you all you need. I'll keep my ears open. mm Marc - Sun, Apr 27th, 2008 5:01 AM PDT Von, Beautiful story and research as always. I'm planning a two-part post on Jimmy G. Monday's post will be recollections of Jimmy from you, Hal McKusick, Bud Shank, Danny Bank and Teddy Charles (I hang out with a great crowd). Part 2 will be my 10 favorite recordings. Can you scan the photo you mentioned from the Babasin Ork article? I'd love to feature it, and I know Hal will get a kick out of seeing it. But only if it's easy enough. Amazing time. And for guys like your Dad, Hal, Bud, etc., just another day at the office! Many thanks. Always a great post when I can mention Harry. Marc - Sat, Apr 26th, 2008 4:49 AM PDT Von, Your note was beautiful. May I use in part for my post? Gosh, your Dad would be so proud to know what you've done to keep the name and flame alive and burning bright. And thanks for letting me post the photo. Hope you're well. I have been tempted several times to write to you off-line from the JWC site, of which we are both members. I shall enjoy listening to some tracks of your father's today. Best Wishes, Tom Lisle - Tue, Mar 18th, 2008 5:51 PM PDT Let me know when the movie gets ready! I'm mixing indie flicks all the time these days... and your project KICKS! ROCK ON! Lisle Emanuelle - Fri, Mar 14th, 2008 10:10 PM PDT I've just been sitting around waiting for something to happen. My life's been generally boring. To see what you are doing here to honor your father is wonderful. I am not only encouraged by that, I am inspired to want to do great things in my life. The best of luck to you! Cheers, Steve Charles - Mon, Mar 10th, 2008 1:19 AM PDT Von, Got your message and also wanted to pass along this message: See "The Band's Visit." It's a foreign film about an Egyptian police department band's trip to Israel. You must see it for at least one line in the movie. I don't want to give it away. You will be touched. cl Ben - Thu, Mar 6th, 2008 7:32 PM PST Von, hi, The article about you and your father did run in the March issue of Jazziz. The issue is on it's way to newsstands now. I will be running an article on Charlie Parker on the www.jazz.com website in a couple of months, and I commissioned artist Suzanne Cerny to do a portrait of Bird for this article. Hugs Jo Jody - Wed, Feb 6th, 2008 3:20 PM PST Simply amazing!!!!!!!! Trevor Tolley - Wed, Jan 30th, 2008 8:06 PM PST "More representative were the recordings Marmarosa made for Dial on December 3rd, 1947, supervised by Eddie Laguna of Sunset Records. Marmarosa, ever the perfectionist, recorded twenty-nine takes that day. Five tunes initially came out of this session: Bopmatism, Dodo's Dance, Trade Winds, Dary Departs, and Cosmo Street. Eleven takes in all have been issued. The supporting players on this session were Jackie Mills on drums and Harry Babasin playing the plucked jazz cello for the first time in recording history, though he also plays bass on Dary Departs. Bopmatism, whose quality is characterised by its title, is perhaps the most impressive track here with its immaculate and relaxed single note passages and beautifully controlled variation in pace. The lovely Trade Winds highlights impressive interplay between piano and cello." sean - Sun, Jan 27th, 2008 3:42 AM PST Wow this is cool! Thanks for sharing! :) Jim - Sat, Jan 26th, 2008 7:15 AM PST Hi Von, The Trevor Tolley article on Marmarosa singles out Harry's FIRST recording of plucked cello jazz on the Dial sessions. He was some guy. Soloing on the cello too. With him holding it looked like a big viola didn't it. This is very exciting ... he is exciting... and your excitement is contagious (to the living)! I am going to learn more about him! Joanna - Wed, Jan 16th, 2008 1:08 AM PST You are doing a good job for your Dad. Wonderful thing! I didn't know what to say except YES COOL ... almost way too cool I think!! I had to say something ... really exciting, and I could FEEL yours! JB - Mon, Jan 14th, 2008 6:37 PM PST The story gets better and better. Fred - Sun, Jan 13th, 2008 10:38 AM PST Hello Von - I read a post of yours on the West Coast Jazz Group. I doubt that I can help you with your documentary film about your father, but I had to respond. I went to NTU in 1945 and graduated in 1948. I was in the first One O'Clock Lab Band that closely followed your father, Jimmy Giuffre, and Herb Ellis at NTU. They were legends to all of us at that time (and they still are) and all of us tried to come close to their expertise and jazz playing ability. I will follow your progress very carefully and I would like copies of everything you do. Best regards and the best of luck to you in your endeavor. pamela - Fri, Jan 11th, 2008 9:33 PM PST Neat stuff here, I've enjoyed my visit :) I wish you great success! Pam Barbra - Fri, Jan 11th, 2008 5:44 AM PST Dear Von, Good of you to send me e-mail about your projects. I am not financially able to help you in your quest for funds, it would be great if you could get to some producer on the West Coast, I don't know who funded Lighthouse Movie, or who funded Diana Krall DVDs... It will be wonderful tribute to your father and I believe that children who want to honor a deserving parent usually succeed. Barbra Monty - Thu, Jan 10th, 2008 3:19 AM PST Hi Von A jazz player, student, teacher and fan, I must confess I've not yet heard of your pops until finding you. I googled his name and discovered amazing info about the west coast jazz scene with your father at the root of it!! I'm thrilled to be able to give props and encouragement to you for your endeavor with the film!! Please keep me posted, I cant wait to see it. I'm from sactown and would be happy to help in any way I can if you need assistance literally with anything. Even if not to do with your father's movie, even with ONOFFON promotion networking whatever. ONOFFON stirred my interest and I'm just floored at what I've discovered! I wish you the best success this coming year! Send me an email and I'll forward contact info to you. Peace Monty Everett - Wed, Jan 9th, 2008 7:17 PM PST A very nice and touching story, thanks Von. Lynda - Wed, Jan 9th, 2008 6:00 AM PST Von, I can see that you have a lot of good things going on. What an adventure. I'm certain your Dad is proud of you for honoring him in this way. Please continue to keep me posted. If there is anything I can ever do to help, please let me know! JB - Tue, Jan 8th, 2008 12:21 PM PST It's like your Dad is reaching out to you through others. Hope the documentary is coming along well. Happy New Year! TK - Mon, Jan 7th, 2008 11:27 PM PST Von - just saw your dad in the movie, "A Song Is Born". It's a really nice little movie and your dad and the rest of the musicians bring a whole lot of cool to it. So nice to see a big, relaxed, integrated group of musicians sitting around together in someone's parlor -- where ten years before the black musicians would likely have been intercut so they could be removed for Southern release. A great little pick up band, there. :) Emily - Sat, Jan 5th, 2008 12:45 PM PST WOW...Your dad really made an impact on others!!!! How wonderful that you are keeping his creative legacy alive!!! Jean - Fri, Jan 4th, 2008 1:01 AM PST Wow, Von. That is way cool. Hey, have you investigated the possibility of receiving a grant to continue the documentary. There would probably be some sort of restriction involving profit but the grant might be able to provide production expenses plus a stipend for living expenses. Also there are some retreat areas which provide living and work areas for a set time. I saw listings for them in the Songwriters book. Also you may want to look into the Redford's Sundance ranch thing. They have a festival for film makers and I am not sure but there may be some sort of financial support available. Anyway, good luck to you. Jacqueline - Tue, Jan 1st, 2008 3:21 AM PST Happy New Year!!!!! The best to you with your jazz museum and documentary in this new year! Joe M. - Wed, Dec 26th, 2007 10:42 PM PST I just watched the Israeli film "The Band's Visit". One of the characters is a Chet Baker fan and at one point he says he has all of Baker's recordings "from the Harry Babasin Octet to the last concert in 1988". I must admit that until then I hadn't realized that Chet's first recordings were with your dad. So sorry to say I wasn't familiar with your father, but I certainly can see he left quite a legacy. If I can be of any help, please let me know, OK? I wish you the very best with this project--it sounds incredible! Your Friend, Billy Sheehan Ted - Mon, Nov 26th, 2007 3:12 PM PST Von - I was glad to get to meet you and I commend your efforts to preserve and share your father's great musical legacy. But I think your documentary greatly deserves some ink. I'm going to talk with my editors at Jazziz, and see if we can get another West Coast writer to tackle your story. Alice - Thu, Nov 15th, 2007 7:22 AM PST JAZZ LIVES!!!!!!!! Grasila - Tue, Nov 6th, 2007 9:52 PM PST Beautiful! Glad to see that jazz lives. Thank you for your dedication to a priceless artform. The Recording Academy - Tue, Nov 6th, 2007 7:03 PM PST Dear Von, I was forwarded your email about your great project on your father and inquiry about interest from the Recording Academy. I visited your link at NYFA and googled your father to get a little additional information. I'm sure I have just a thumbnail from that cursory research, but I can only imagine the stories you will tell through your film. I wanted to respond to your specific request as to whether there might be some appropriate interest through the Recording Academy or its Foundations to recognize your father's contribution and/or your film. I have a few thoughts that I will share with you soon via email. Best of luck on your project. Kristen Madsen Sr. Vice President GRAMMY Foundation Mercury - Mon, Nov 5th, 2007 7:19 PM PST MERCURY VERIFIED STEREOPHONIC TAPE RECORDING MVS3-5. THE JAZZ PICKERS. This is a 2 TRACK 7 1/2 IPS for "in line" heads reel-to-reel tape. This stereophonic recording session was made at a Hollywood, Calif. studio, with Bob Shad acting as recording director. The subtlety of this progressive jazz group made necessary a series of accent mikes, including: Harry Babasin's cello, Telefunken U-47; Don Overberg's guitar, RCA 44BX; Bob Harrington's drums and vibes, Altec 21B (Bill Douglas sat in on drums when Harrington played vibes). Buddy Collette's flute, Telefunken U-47. The direct stereophonic pickup was made from a pair of Telefunken U-47 microphones, suspended eight feet apart and ten feet in front of and above the small jazz group. bz - Fri, Nov 2nd, 2007 5:07 PM PDT Hi Von, I got your email address through the the Musicians Union site (Comm Resp 47). How great that you're doing a film about Harry and his music. Please email or call me if I can be of help. I'm in the white pages in North Hollywood. Kenneth - Wed, Oct 31st, 2007 2:21 PM PDT What a pleasure it was to come upon this site. I played trumpet with the Jazzpickers in the late '50's, along with Bud Brisboy, who later took his own life. We recorded a series of Marty Paich arrangements at Northridge State College during that time. They consisted of a four-horn front line, in which I played trumpet. I've thought often about trying to acquire them, but so far I've had no luck. Anyway, thank you for keeping Harry's legacy alive. He was a great musician and a fine fellow. Harry and the Jazzpickers are fondly resting somewhere deep within this old carapace. Lucky - Sat, Oct 27th, 2007 11:41 AM PDT hey onoffon .. your wit is almost as slick as your music ... what can i say ? musically flawless .. song composition excellent .. performances brilliant, recording excellent ... i'm impressed .. different tempos, time changes, atmospheres .. it's all good ... and some are not my favorite genre, but they were still worth listening to ..to me that says a lot when a band can do that ... peace Henri Babeaux - Thu, Oct 25th, 2007 4:48 AM PDT Projects of cultural importance don't gain the attention of the media. The media only reports sensational and shocking news, endless stories of Paris and Lindsay getting arrested, Britney shaving her head. If media coverage paid attention to worthwhile cultural projects, maybe people would care more about things that improve our society. We live in a cultural cesspool... and the media feeds it daily... Tom - Tue, Oct 23rd, 2007 4:40 AM PDT I remember your dad from the Redondo Lounge way back in the 1970s. At the time I knew Ron Pelletier, who was the house drummer there. I would maybe check if UCLA --with its jazz studies program, Gerald Wilson and Kenny Burrell--might help. Also the Herb Alpert Foundation. And maybe some help from Saul Levine who is well connected. Best regards lynda - Wed, Oct 17th, 2007 1:18 PM PDT WOW!!!!!!!! I'm so happy for you!! I'm not at all surprised that they loved your proposal, in fact, they're probably delighted that they're the ones who get to make the documentary happen. You know, wouldn't a documentary like that be played all over the country, all over the world even? (I would love to go to a film festival to see it.) Thank you for letting me be one of the first to know. It means a lot! Will you keep me posted? I'd love to hear the story of how this all unfolds. It should be quite an adventure! Best wishes on your new adventure, and I truly am so happy for you. Golos Armenii - Mon, Oct 15th, 2007 6:46 PM PDT Dear Sirs, Absolutely by chance I heard about Harry Babasin and his creative activity. His Armenian origin pushed me to learn more about him. As the result the article about him was published in the biggest local Armenian newspaper "Golos Armenii" ("The Voice of Armenia"). I'm happy to have his music to airplay it here to meet Armenian listeners with his music. Especially his cello works, as it is very unusual for jazz music. I am happy to make his name more known here in the land of his ancestors. Best regards Sonja - Fri, Oct 12th, 2007 1:14 PM PDT Hi I'm Sonja, As you may have guessed, I am mad about jazz. It is preceded by Christmas Eve on December 24, and in some countries is followed by Boxing Day on December 26. Some Eastern Orthodox Churches celebrate Christmas on January 7, which corresponds to December 25 on the Julian calendar. December 25 as a birthdate for Jesus is merely traditional, and is not thought to be his actual date of birth. Amanda - Sat, Dec 16th, 2006 5:14 PM PST Great Site - really useful information! Debbie - Thu, Mar 23rd, 2006 1:25 PM PST Nice site! parker - Fri, Feb 25th, 2005 4:20 PM PST hey jazz guys. I'm searching far and wide trying to find good live music anywhere in Los Angeles. The closer to Santa Monica the better. I know we have that one club on 4th, which I haven't checked out yet. Are there any hot spots in Hollywood? Do people like music by good musicians anymore? Whenever I let my friends take me to see a band, its always garbage. I need to find a place, and lead a pack and hopefully hit something. I absolutely love music, and I don't know if I can survive in this city without good music. And lets be honest, there MUST be a good music scene SOMEWHERE in this city, right? email me, because I'll never check this blog again. parker_sellers@hotmail.com Ken Koenig - Mon, May 24th, 2004 2:58 PM PDT I am a long time west coast jazz fan. I am currently working on a documentary film about The Lighthouse, the Lighthouse All Stars and west coast jazz in general. Please contact me if you wish more information. Best wishes on your endeavor. Von Babasin - Sun, Feb 22nd, 2004 11:08 AM PST Hello everybody! We are getting closer to making our jazz museum a reality! Keep your eyes and ears open for the latest developments. We MUST preserve this legacy for future generations of listeners and artists - to inspire true instrumental virtuosity! I have two questions: -Will ever Vol.2 of the Jazz in Hollywood Collection see the light? -In the records history listing you show all of the Nocturne 10" series but NPL 4, NPL 5, NPL 9. What are they? By the way, I own NPL 1,2,3,6,7,8. Thanks Roberto Los Angeles Music Week - Sat, Jan 11th, 2003 6:09 PM PST Von, Keep up the great work!
