Von -
If I had to sum it all up, I would just say that you guys are incredible. When you add all your sonic elements from the instrumental and vocal spectrum of virtuosity, the whole package fills up with creative inspirations and tonal bliss. It´s an independent progressive jazz lovers dream.
Peace,
JJ

Your site keeps getting better and better! Your older articles are not as good as newer ones you have a lot more creativity and originality now keep it up!

Von,
I am truly in awe to learn that Harry Babasin helped create Bossa Nova years before Jobim and Getz received credit. I want to get a copy of Brazilliance - Volume 1. My wife and I are both big band fans. We like all those band leaders - The Dorseys, Charlie Barnet, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, Bob Crosby, Jerry Gray, Les Brown, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Lionel Hampton, Vaughan Monroe, and Tex Beneke.
Regards, Chuck

You need to know that you are capable of great things. It is precisely because, played correctly, your cards have the potential to win the game, that you need to concentrate so carefully. You have to be bold and adventurous. But you also have to think about what's the best way (and when's the best time) to take action. My thoughts and prayers are with your success.

Ivy - Sunday, January 10th, 2010 1:22 PM PST
Hello from Zürich,
I just want to say that I like your website very much. Best of luck in making your documentary.
I will come back soon.
Yours Ivy

This was some great music, Von. I've loved those LPs from the first time I heard New Orleans DJ Dick Martin play them on the radio. You are justifiably proud of the old man!

Mike - Tuesday, December 29th, 2009 8:06 PM PST
Wow Von, what an amazing man your father must have been. I love your story and the fact that you've pursued the story of his life so passionately!

Frank - Thursday, December 24th, 2009 12:23 AM PST
Von,
I have to believe that there will come a time that you and your father will be revered and respected at least as much as Miley and Billy Ray Cyrus. Even though your father 'only' invented the Bossa Nova instead of writing Achy Breaky Heart and you are 'only' IOMA's 2007 Best Bass Player and not the Disney Channel's media darling... I pray for your success every day and wish you a Merry Christmas and a very happy and successful 2010!

Olivia - Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009 9:05 PM PST
Von!!! As I said last night you are the Bass player extradinaire. You rocked it! Had a blast!

hm.. love this style.

Jason - Monday, December 21st, 2009 5:03 AM PST
You'd think that helping to invent a new genre of music and being the first person to play your instrument in a jazz setting would be enough to get you some headlines in the jazz history books. You'd be wrong. Meet Harry Babasin, the bassist who played on the very first recordings of what became bossa nova, and then became the first person to play pizzicato cello in a jazz group. Thanks, Von, for doing right by your dad and west coast jazz!

Holly - Wednesday, December 16th, 2009 1:14 PM PST
Thank you Von, your Dad was so young!! Wow. Your dad, with so many gifts to entertain in music & just being who he was. I've forgotten if I had mentioned that when I was about 8 yrs old, I had been given a bear who was my favorite because he was a gift even though I had failed the year in school, my new adoptive parents had promised to give my brother & I a passing present for school & it meant a lot, when I was given the gift of Happy Harry, a 2 ft tall smiling bear who made me happy for many years. Because he'd meant so much to me. I'd managed to keep him for over 30 yrs. Warm Hugs Harry the Bear & Von, from your Friend Holly xoxox

Just an amazing site!

Lady Haig - Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009 9:40 PM PST
Von,
Your father was "da man" and the straight no chaser "clean" as a whistle virtuoso who was so focused and intense he defied description; he was a leader...but they all were and they were able to play as "one" with a groove that titilated the senses and made music so open and rare that if they had a recording devise at every session there would be more of the more...if that is possible.

Randi - Sunday, November 22nd, 2009 8:43 AM PST
You guys rocked last night Von! You had a big smile on your face all night, it must be great to do what you love!

Marlene - Friday, November 20th, 2009 9:43 PM PST

Hi Von, brings back memories when I did security for Spielberg's private screening for Jaws. Also, enjoyed my 26 days of Craft Service, thanks for telling me they were hiring, almost made it to the Union, got laid off just before Christmas. I would probably still be in California if it were not for that.

Alberto - Tuesday, October 6th, 2009 4:09 PM PDT
There's a 45 rpm ep you may or may not know about but probably do, maybe you can share a little history, it also coincides with what you said about DownBeat sharing the same address, maybe that has something to do with it.. it's on the DownBeat label, Jazz in Hollywood series, featuring 4 different groups, engineered by John Neal and produced by Harry Babasin, "A workshop recordings custom pressing" Lou Levy trio with Harry Babasin on bass and Larry Bunker on drums playing "Serenade in Blue", Virgil Gonsalves sextet with the same rhythm section playing "Bounce", Bob Enevoldsen quintet playing "Fast Buck", and Herbie Harper quartet playing "Indian Summer", all with Harry Babasin on bass. The downbeat logo is the same as the magazine, pretty rare disc.

I enjoyed reading about you and your family history, very intriguing.
I currently live outside of Dallas, so

Von,
I'll make those corrections and send the story on to Kristen. As soon as I hear when it's scheduled to run, I'll let you know. It's been really great working with you. And our conversations have renewed my interest in jazz. I didn't realize how much of what I used to listen to with my late husband was actually West Coast jazz. Love those sounds!!!
Thanks again,
Joyce

I believe this project may be a fit for our self-fund. We are in the final stages of putting our own monies together and I anticipate around Sept 1st we will be ready to begin funding projects. Since our focus and aim will be "family-friendly" positive message pieces, including documentaries, I believe that this project may be right in our "sweet spot". I'm not going to make any guarantees, but I will have our people look at it once we're up and running.

Hi Von,
You may remember me, a bit of Armenian and a lot of jazz enthusiasm from New Zealand.
In case the information is new to you, last evening we watched a movie called "The Band's Visit", an Israeli/Egyptian film. A couple of the musicians were Chet Baker enthusiasts (a struggle for me, the more so since I am ploughing my way through a biography), and one says that he has a good collection of his records, right from the early days with Harry Babasin's Octet.
Best Wishes,
Tom

Von, what evocative, amazing and lovely music!!!
Thank you so much for this fascinating cd!!!
No wonder you have won many awards for your music!!! Went to the website and so enjoyed the article in the Studio City newspaper about your wonderful Dad!!! You have followed in his footsteps and how proud he must be, knowing that you have carried on his exquisite gift and that you are preserving the history of that most beautiful of all jazz types, the glorious West Coast sound!!!
Warmest wishes,
Lucille

Esther - Saturday, August 1st, 2009 6:22 AM PDT

Von, you and your wonderful project are in my prayers, for the Lord to bring it to fruition to honor your beloved Dad and the gift He gave to him and to those wonderful musicians who gave us that glorious West Coast sound!! (My favorite music of all time!!!)
God bless you and your family!!!
Lovingly,
Lucille

Albert - Tuesday, July 28th, 2009 5:05 AM PDT
The first time I heard your pop's name was on an Inglewood Jam Session with Charlie Parker. Please keep me posted on the documentary, when did Harry Babasin and Roy Harte fold the label? I see Jimmy Rowles did a lot of work for these sessions as well..

Best Regards,
Albert

Von, I'm jes so proud of everything you've done for your dad. He would be so proud. If I had a dad like him, I'd be dang proud too. It's good that, thanks to you, he won't be lost over time. So many musicians were back then (and now), who deserve to be remembered for their important contributions. You're a wonderful son!
