The

JAZZ IN HOLLYWOOD

Series

The final two pieces of this collection are piano trios that didn't actually release as part of
the original collection. Nocturne hit hard times when the 12" album hit the streets. The
entire stocks of Nocturne records were pressed on 10" albums, and when the 12" made the
10" obsolete, the little companies that could not afford to change over on a moment's notice
had extremely hard times competing with the major companies. This basically drove
Nocturne into bancruptcy. But, obviously, these recordings still exist and are now being
presented to the public in a format far superior of any to date. These two albums are both
wonderful contributions; the Lou Levy Trio and the Jimmy Rowles Trio. Harry on bass
and Larry Bunker on drums on the former, and Red Mitchell on bass and Art Madigan
on drums on the latter. While the
Fresh Sound Nocturne collection has the Jimmy Rowles
album, Fantasy's does not. But, the
Fantasy Records collection features recordings
of the Steve White Quartet and Quintet, again not releasing originally due to
financial problems, which are not found in the Fresh Sound pressing.
